General Education Program
The majority of faculty at Illinois State contribute to the General Education program
in some way, and as such CTLT offers these links to significant articles and web sites
related both to the Gen-Ed program at ISU and to other programs around the country.
Under "Best Practices," faculty will find different readings and applications
of a key text by Arthur Chickering, in which he suggested seven key principles for
more effective undergraduate education. Since Illinois State spear-heads Educating
Illinois, links below will also direct you to the web site for that initiative.
Best Practices in Undergraduate Education
- Adult Learner-Centered
Institutions: Best Practices for the 21st Century (Susan Mancuso, Western Michigan)
- Professors Review Best Teaching
Practices (David Butt & Edward Reutzel, Penn State)
- "Students were asked to rank order a list of ten, previously identified, best
teaching practices. The findings show surprising differences not only between the
students in the two colleges, but as a function of their gender, year in school,
and grade point average."
- Seven Principles
for Good Practice in Undergraduate Education (Brigham Young)
- Based on the educational theories of Arthur Chickering and Zelda Gamson, these
principles are based on the "underlying view of education as active, cooperative,
and demanding."
