Supporting Synchronous Learning (Jeffers - PDF)

Synchronous learning is nothing more than a learning environment where the instructor and student interact in real time to facilitate learning. While the traditional face-to-face (F2F) classroom is the original method for creating a synchronous learning environment, the availability and increasing sophistication of web-based learning tools takes traditional or classic face-to-face synchronous learning into the 21st century. This panel presentation is an overview of an interdisciplinary collaboration between an experienced webbased synchronous learning provider, the College of Education, and a new adopter of the technology, the Mennonite College of Nursing. Three presenters will outline the perspectives of each of these two colleges in the areas of instruction, technology support, and the role of the department/college in ensuring that web-based synchronous learning is successful. They will also demonstrate the tools and reflect on the pros and cons of the experience from the perspectives of both an experienced and a new user.
