Walking the Talk: Reflecting on Positive Student Mentoring

Lori Woeste, Health Sciences

While we may spend the majority of our teaching hours in the traditional role, many of us spend additional hours as faculty advisors to student organizations, residence halls and/or independent studies. In these roles, it is especially important to consider the significant role faculty play in providing positive role models for students. “Walking the talk” of responsible engagement ourselves is one of the best ways we can help students achieve the outcomes hoped for during any engagement process. This presentation will be discussion based, centered on the sharing of strategies used when fulfilling roles beyond the traditional classroom. I will discuss both successful and less-than-optimal approaches to advising a student club, a residence hall floor, and multiple independent studies. I’ll also discuss the role that reflection plays in analysis and evaluation for both student and faculty mentor.
